The Pineapple Project, our US-based team, is developing a SMS application for subsistence farmers in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The goal of their application is to provide farmers with information on markets, growing conditions, and resources to make their yields as profitable and efficient as possible. The team hopes that through this distribution of information, small-scale subsistence farmers will be able to more effectively compete with large-scale produce companies.
Currently the team is working on testing the system in equatorial regions, beginning with Chile. They are also developing projections of crop rotation needs, user integration via open source access, and the inclusion of indigenous population knowledge into their resource dataset. Check out their application video below for more information on their project and goals.
The Pineapple Project is also in the process of exploring sponsorship and funding sources as they further develop their application and move toward implementation. If you or anyone you know would be interested in supporting their efforts, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
